The 2025 Travis Audubon Shorebird Class visited the Hornsby Bend ponds on 10/5/25. We found 8 shorebird species on a day with very few shorebirds.

As we were leaving we had one last stop for a grebe — which turned out to be 1 Least Grebe and 1 Eared Grebe which was nice!!

Eared Grebe. Note red eye, bill length and lack of a sharp demarcation between black and white on the head/cheek (as in Horned Grebe).
Least Grebe. Note smaller bill (in the Sibley App the Least Grebe’s bill is painted too thin). Least Grebe often shows a fluffy tail region, but not this time.
Least Grebe. Note the yellow eye in this highly over-exposed pix.

We also had an interesting Barn Swallow. Note the stretched out length of tail/wings and reddish brown throat quickly make this a Barn Swallow, despite slightly odd plumage.
