Hornsby Shorebirds
6 species of shorebird at Hornsby this morning, including an example of “frosty vs brown” shorebirds.
I don’t recall so many, and so long staying, Avocets at Hornsby before. At last a dozen there today.

14 species of shorebird at Hornsby this morning. I’m surprised I haven’t seen Western or WHite-rumped Sandpipers yet. The fun part today was 20 Hudsonian Godwits flying over the ponds and then 4 landed and stuck around for 15 minutes.
Here’s a reminder for you photographers: I was at Cedar point on Lake Buchanan yesterday. I caught two distant pix of a flock of shorebirds heading south. (Love witnessing migration !!!!) Couldn’t tell much with bins, but since I had a pix I blew it up and can easily see needle like bills, distinctive profile…
17 species of shorebird this morning at Hornsby. Ties my personal best at Hornsby and I just missed the BB Plover that was reported. Migrating Franklin’s Gulls and White-faced Ibis also cool.
Saw some rain coming yesterday so headed to Hornsby for another shorebird and migrant fix!! Lots of White-rumped Sand, a flyby of 3 Black-bellied Plovers, Semipalm plovers, beautiful breeding plumage phalaropes, Dowitchers, and Stilt sands and the first time to ever see all 5 peeps on the same day!! Also lots of wet swallows, migrating…
Eric, Lance and I led the Shorebird Class to Corpus over the last weekend. I had a great time with highlights for me being: “That’s him!!!” (IDing the long-staying Glaucous Gull in mid-air at 65 mph on the JFK causeway), Identifying grass-pipers at the sod farms with the class at about ½ mile distant (definitely…
I showed my friend Kelly the phalarope feeding technique using surface tension and he showed me the old drafting ruling pens using the same principle. So naturally we had to try it ourselves!!
