Since I’m going to attempt to teach a few gulls next class here’s a reminder: it’s about time to be on the lookout (and listen-out) for franklin’s gulls. They migrate from prairie nesting sites To west coast of South America. Right over cen Tex. Also listen for another iconic sound of fall migration—Sandhill cranes!!

Spent some time under a tree next to Lake Sommerville yesterday. Had 500-600 White pelicans, a smattering of gulls (Franklin’s & Ring billed) and 5 species of shorebirds For the 2024 Shorebird class: Can you ID the shorebirds and tell me why? (Feel free to review Eric’s fine table)
Gull #3 for Gulls class. (Same day, location) Gull #3 is an Adult Herring. We can see that this is an adult gull. Pretty distant shot, but if you zoom in we don’t see any ring as in ring bill, but more telling the transition from gray underwing to black underwing tip is more gray-to-black…
