On RGV trip on Monday I found this interesting gull at the Port Aransas jetty.
I called it a Great Black Backed Gull in the field based on thick pink legs, big bill, large size (a good bit larger than Herrings present), white head, thick neck and patterned coverts.
Posting pix to gull FB pages, there has been some debate, but consensus seems to be Herring Gull or possibly a hybrid Herring/GBBG.
Several places on the Gulls Field trip we had very large numbers of birds. Here’s only 1/2 of a huge flight of cormorants that flew by us on the Texas city Dike. Anybody volunteer to count them?

On Saturday Lance, Jane Tillman and I chased the much visited Gray Kingbird in Houston. Here’s a few pix. I was most impressed with the BILL!! We happened to be in Corpus over the weekend so stopped in to see this Brown Noddy that had been hanging around. Sadly he was taken in for rehab just after we saw, but later died.
Saw a post for this gulls book by Fred Shaffer III and so immediately bought myself a xmas present It’s less dense than all of the other gull books I own and has nice short description and good comparison photos of NA gulls. It doesn’t show all the variations, but for your basic gull book…
