Semipalmated vs Least
Here’s a comparison of Semipalmated with a Least.
So I think we can see actual black legs here on this sandpiper. It’s a short-winged bird; wings are just atop tail. Bill is short and pretty straight. Overall coloration is fairly pale, not brown. Baird’s and Least are brown-hued birds. Both also have a chest coloration a little brown. This one is bright white underneath a few markings. Baird’s and Least also have bills that thin and droop towards the tip. Bill is not long enough for Western so that makes this a Semipalmated. It was the pale coloration that first attracted my eye. This was the only Semipalm in 2 visits to Hornsby recently. I’ll post a comparison of this bird with Least next.
