When our VECAL FT bidders canceled this morning, Eric and I walked around Hornsby on our own. Nice to see some ducks on the ponds, lots of butter butts, blue head vireo, and other regulars. Best birds: a stunning male vermilion flycatcher (previously reported) seemed to be glowing and a late 1st year male Baltimore…
Now is a good time to visit Hornsby to study the 3 small peeps (as Allan and I did this morning). Notice how the “frostier” semipalm and Western stick out in a group of brown Least. Notice the chevron marks on flanks of Western and lack of on Semipalm. Notice how colorful western is and…
Good news/bad news from my first trip to Hornsby during fall migration. Good: Fall migration is here!!! Good: lots of floating mud habitat at Hornsby. Good: Lots of shorebirds — 1000 plus I estimated. Good: 9 species of shorebird. Good: temp is manageable from 6:30-10:00am or so. Good: lots of Stilt and whistle duck chicks….
