Allan and I had a good commune with the Glaucous Gull in Corpus yesterday. (Missed the Iceland Gull there for the 4th time).
I had a great time on the 29th communing with a visiting celebrity in Corpus Christi!! If you haven’t heard, this is a Kelp Gull born about 1 year ago in the southern hemisphere (South America most likely). Very impressive bill (compared to Herring in pic).
On Saturday Eric texted me about Franklin’s gulls at Hornsby and I was sorry to miss. But on Sunday driving back from Dallas I hit the mother-lode!!!! I watched for at least 45 minutes and guestimated 3000-4000 gulls went by!! What a blast!!! And you’ll never guess the wonderful nature setting where I witnessed this………………………………….
Some of you from Gulls Class may remember that we discussed the labryinthine taxonomy of the Herring gull complex. The Europeans consider the American Herring to be a separate species from the European Herring. Likewise the Vega Gull. While the AOS currently considers American Herring and Vega to be a subspecies of European Herring. A…

Spent some time under a tree next to Lake Sommerville yesterday. Had 500-600 White pelicans, a smattering of gulls (Franklin’s & Ring billed) and 5 species of shorebirds For the 2024 Shorebird class: Can you ID the shorebirds and tell me why? (Feel free to review Eric’s fine table)
