Just heard Sandhills going over Hyde park. (Photos from New Mexico, not Hyde Park).
On a walk in the neighborhood I had some nice birds today, ash throated, vermillion, scissors flys, grasshopper, lark, chippy, savanna and brewers sparrows, and black capped vireo. No pix.
Thought I’d do at least 1 High Island warm-up post. This time a brief reminder on the 12 regular Texas vireos. Plus 1 rarity. The 1st key to vireos is their song!! Learn it!! Most are quite distinctive, the exception being the 3 in the Solitary Vireo complex. The photos tell most of the visual…

Since I’m going to attempt to teach a few gulls next class here’s a reminder: it’s about time to be on the lookout (and listen-out) for franklin’s gulls. They migrate from prairie nesting sites To west coast of South America. Right over cen Tex. Also listen for another iconic sound of fall migration—Sandhill cranes!!
Hearing migrants on my walk this morning: Yellow, Nashville & Orange crown warblers, Clay-colored Sparrow, Dickcissels, Broad wing Hawk, Great crested fly… Also a new yard bird in Hyde park yesterday: PABU!! I’m getting antsy to get to High Island !!!
