Had 13 shorebird species at Lake Balmorhea this morning. American Avocet, Less Yellowlegs, Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Snowy Plover, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Upland Sandpiper, Black-necked stilt, Solitary Sandpiper, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Western Sandpiper. Other birds of interest were: an early Ring-billed gull, Tricolored Heron, Black terns, Forster’s Tern, Neotropic cormorant and Black and…
Went to Corpus yesterday. Here’s some winter shorebirds.
Migration !!! Had a few hundred of these guys near La Grange yesterday. Then I stopped by Hornsby about noon and it was almost devoid of shorebird habitat. Water is up and meets the grass, so no “shore”. I did manage to find 3 of the the “big 4”: Least, Killdeer & Spotted.
Spent some time under a tree next to Lake Sommerville yesterday. Had 500-600 White pelicans, a smattering of gulls (Franklin’s & Ring billed) and 5 species of shorebirds For the 2024 Shorebird class: Can you ID the shorebirds and tell me why? (Feel free to review Eric’s fine table)
