Well I’ve been out gulling most days this week. Staying at my sister’s who lives near a favorite gull location on Lake Ray Hubbard. I’ve been looking for, and thought I’d found, variously Iceland gull (Thayers), California Gull, and today a great black backed gull. After review of bad digiscoped-through-the-fog-in-the-chill-breeze pix and videos and consultation…
Anyone been curious about the word “Wheatear”? According to Peter Mathisson in “The Tree Where Man was Born” it’s old english for “whte arse”. (Painting by David A. Sibley)
And here’s a small challenge for you B3 grads (or anyone else): ID this bird and tell us why. What is the diagnostic field mark?
Had 3 Least Flycatchers giving their “whit” calls in a loose flock this morning at my place (The Dacha). (Pix from last winter).
Also took me about 30 seconds to add this Brown Booby in Aggieland a couple of weeks ago to my Texas list. Only bird on the lake. Same trip as the Limpkin, I was on a roll!!! 60 seconds of birding and added 2.
A pair of Dacha Species #144 were floating in the river when I got home today, but then they took flight pretty quickly when they saw me ….. any guesses as to their identity?? View in group
