Dunlin (alternate)

The Dunlin is a short-legged, curve-billed sandpiper the same size as a Sanderling. This first photo was taken in June on the breeding grounds in Alaska.

Dunlin (transitioning from basic to alternate)

The Dunlin is a common sight on the Texas Coast in spring where various stages of transition from basic to alternate are seen.

Dunlin (basic)

Dunlin are also common on the Texas Coast in winter in their basic plumage. One photo shows a much paler Sanderling with a group of Dunlin.

Dunlin are occasionally present in Central Texas during migration. These 3 individuals were at Hornsby Bend in October of 2024. The size difference between Least Sandpiper and Dunlin is apparent in several of the photos.
