Wilson’s Snipe

The Wilson’s Snipe is a cryptic and very easily flushed shorebird that winters in the most of the continental states including Texas. It usually prefers to remain hidden in marshy habitats until an intruder approaches when it suddenly squawks and rapidly flies on back-curved wings. The Snipes flight is distinctive, rapid and wobbling from side to side. At other times the Snipe may remain “hidden” relying on its stripped camouflage and utter stillness for concealment. The stripes up the back are diagnostic.
