Wilson’s Phalarope
Wilson’s Phalarope are by far the most common phalaropes in Texas. They occur in both fall and spring migration and may gather in several hundreds. They are elegant and photogenic birds with thin needle-like bills and long necks. They often spin in circles on the water apparently creating a vortex which collects prey items. The bird pictured below with yellow legs is a first-year bird.
