American Woodcock
The American Woodcock is a cryptic, woodland shorebird. It is an uncommon but regular winter Texan. It startles easily when hiding along woodland trails, but can sometimes be very patient with observers as the close up photos below indicate.
With its long bill, huge, almost-360-degree-eyes, rotund body and no-neck appearance the American Woodcock has a unique shape and is only likely to be confused with Wilson’s Snipe which occupy different habitats (marshes).
