Hudsonian Godwit (alternate)

The Hudsonian Godwit is occasionally seen in moist fields in Central Texas in mid-April and irregularly seen on the Texas Coast at that time. As another elliptical migrant, the Hudsonian is seldom seen in Texas on its south-bound migration. In the spring of 2025 several groups of Hudsonian Godwits passed over and through Hornsby Bend, with a number staying multiple days — this was a rare treat to see this species for extended periods in Central Texas.

In alternate plumage it is rich tones of reddish-brown, black and white. The white rump, black tail, and white wing-stripes stand out in flight. Unlike the Marbled, the Hudsonian’s upper mandible is all dark. It is smaller than the more common Marbled Godwit.
