Juvenile Shorebirds Hornsby

Here’s a photo dump from Hornsby last night. Nearly all the birds are juveniles. Just imagine: they were hatched in July or August in Canada or Alaska and just flew a minimum of 2600 miles to get to Hornsby Bend so that I could take their Pix!!!! Thanks guys!!

Question 1: How do I know they are juveniles (describe please)?

Question 2: can you find one that is more gray (less brown) and is not a Least in a couple of the pix?

Super bonus extra credit question 3: can you find Mr. Baird’s in a couple of pix? (Not a good view at all, so this is a toughy).

Of the 39 species we cover in class, I’ve seen 22 at Hornsby in about the past month. The only thing I think I’ve missed was Black-bellied Plover. We recently read a very good book called “Orison for a Curlew”(Orison = prayer). It’s about the Slender-billed Curlew of Europe. Some of the narrative took us to places we had birded in Bulgaria.
