Shorebird time of Year
After gulls and flysnatchers, I’m starting to think of shorebirds again!
This pix didn’t make the cut in the TAS Greg Lasley photo contest, but it was one of my favorites I took during birdathon.

Continuing with Gulls FT last weekend: These 3 made about 5 passes in a very interesting display just for us!!!
Here’s another odd coloration on a Least Sandpiper from Hornsby yesterday. I had a similar one last year. The least in the back is more normal colored. The front one looked almost red in person.
I had a great time at Granger Lake yesterday, sitting solo by the swim area watching migration go by!! No gulls at the swim area, but good numbers flying by and at 2 poorly accessible roosts.
6 species of shorebird at Hornsby this morning, including an example of “frosty vs brown” shorebirds. I don’t recall so many, and so long staying, Avocets at Hornsby before. At last a dozen there today.
15 Species of shorebird at Hornsby this morning. Here’s a Quiz bird for Shorebird class.
Good news/bad news from my first trip to Hornsby during fall migration. Good: Fall migration is here!!! Good: lots of floating mud habitat at Hornsby. Good: Lots of shorebirds — 1000 plus I estimated. Good: 9 species of shorebird. Good: temp is manageable from 6:30-10:00am or so. Good: lots of Stilt and whistle duck chicks….
