I guess I’m getting antsy for High Island!! Thought I’d start posting a few ID reminders and mnemonics that I have to give myself each year. First one is on the 2 big Rails.
Here’s a photo dump from Hornsby last night. Nearly all the birds are juveniles. Just imagine: they were hatched in July or August in Canada or Alaska and just flew a minimum of 2600 miles to get to Hornsby Bend so that I could take their Pix!!!! Thanks guys!! Question 1: How do I know…
Went hunting for shorebirds at Lake Buchanan this morning. Looks like lots of shorebird habitat all around the lake, but I only found 1 Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 2 flyover Upland Sandpipers and 7 Avocets. Here’s hoping more stop in next time.
An apparent adult Kelp Gull found at Brownsville landfill this morning. Landfill access as below.
And so it goes — Grackles are next. They’re actually fun on the Bolivar Peninsula!! (you’re on you own for females (ask the males)).
