These guys are pests to native species, but there is some interesting plumage this time of year.
After birding in the wind and rain most of the day, watching this Merlin eat his meal in the hot tub at Mary’s (us in the hot tub, not the merlin) was quite copacetic!!!
Oddly, I’ve run across 3 different birds this year that appear to be runts of the litter. Ring-billed Gull, Long-billed Dowitcher and White Pelican.

Been uppies and dickcissels going over regularly in small numbers this morning at “The Dacha “. Also been hearing the snap of warbler bills in small groups. The ones I got on were yellow warblers. Pretty sure I heard the “ick” call of an oriole, but could not find him. And Dacha bird #137 is…………….what…
Anyone been curious about the word “Wheatear”? According to Peter Mathisson in “The Tree Where Man was Born” it’s old english for “whte arse”. (Painting by David A. Sibley)
