Breeding Bird Surveys

Here’s a great way to improve your birding: Volunteer to do a Breeding Bird Survey. You’ve heard me talk about this — now’s your chance to go do it!!!

Here’s what Brent Ortega said on Texbird earlier this year: “The Breeding Bird Survey is administered by 3 countries and they jointly decided to cancel last years bird surveys. They will be conducted this year. There are only a few vacancies at this time in Texas. You can check on availability of vacant routes at.

There are 9 vacancies available in Texas — see the map below (also see Plumbeous V in action!!). Currently Allan Seils and I do one and Dennis does 2 (nice job Dennis Palafox!!).

Here’s the key — you will have a list of birds you are likely to encounter, so you can study their ID by sight and sound. These gives you a motivation to learn them. Works well if you team up with a friend to record your data. I’ll be happy to coach any of you over phone call or meetup if you volunteer.

I’m here to certify that each of you is ready to take this on– make it so!!
